All of our gold and silver solders are made with a flow additive called "indium". We use indium, as opposed to cadmium, because of overwhelming evidence concerning the toxic nature of cadmium. We acknowledge that indium has it's health risks as well, and recognizing that no solder is particularly healthful, we recommend that Jewelers use a small respiratory mask when soldering with any product... ours or theirs. Despite the extra cost of indium compared to cadmium, we want to make the best solders possible. P.M.West is clear about our types of solders. Only the Plumb solder chart reflects the actual gold content of the solder. By trade tradition, repair solders are marked with the suggested use Karat, not the gold content. Our 14y repair solder is between 10kt &11kt, depending on desired flow. Our repair solders are marked "14Y" (one example) and our plumb solders are all stamped with the word "Plumb".
Mechanical advantages of "Indium" solders-
1.) Flow viscosity or thickness is adjusted to improve seam and fillet quality.
2.) Indium has a far higher boiling temp, preventing porosity at the very start.
3.) Indium allows us to adjust the zinc content to better match today's modern gold formulas. This also gives extra strength to the solder.
Again, handmade assures the very best,
just like the jewelry you produce...
