The Consumer Guide to Palladium Jewelry.
Palladium was first discovered in 1803. It was named
after the asteroid "pallas."
950Pd is a new alloy of a metal long found in jewelry. Palladium is durable
by nature, and this new alloy is formulated to offer flexibility while at the
same time keeping stones very secure. Modern metallurgy makes so much possible!
950Pd (or Palladium) jewelry is 95% palladium, the same purity as most platinum
jewelry—but it costs about the same as 14kt gold, or even less.
However, let's avoid any confusion about what this metal
really is. 950Pd is not platinum. It is an element from the platinum
family or group of metals, which includes iridium, ruthenium, and rhodium.
All of these metals have been traditionally used in jewelry. Except for being
much lighter, 950 Palladium mirrors all the qualities we enjoy in Platinum.
White color, durability, and that attractive patina the surface takes on after
long wear.
950Pd is also not white gold. Sometimes white gold jewelry uses palladium as
a color additive, but only in small amounts. Also, being naturally very white,
palladium jewelry has no need for rhodium plating, which is common on white
gold.
Palladium is much lighter than platinum and feels a lot like gold by weight.
This can mean added comfort when big bold designs are chosen.
Finally, 950Pd will never cause a nickel-related allergic reaction.
